Do You See What God Sees? (Kevin Shrum)
February 9, 2012

Do you see what God sees? God sees things we often do not see. For example, John 4:35 examples God’s challenge to us to see what God sees, “Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.” Matthew 9:36 backs this kind of ‘seeing’ with these words, “When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Again, do you see what God sees? When God ‘looks’ He sees lostness, helplessness, hopelessness, sin, lack of direction. How does God see? He sees all of this with compassion, mercy, grace, and truth. Why does God see us this way? God sees sinners and broken because He loves sinners and the broken.

It is easy to look at the world in disgust. Sin is rampant. Lies are many. It’s an ugly world. Yet, God calls us to go into the world and make disciples of all nations (Mt. 28:16-20). He calls us to love people like He loved people. God calls us to see what He sees. So, this is why Jesus said in John 4:35 that we are to “…lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.” Could it be that the reason God doesn’t use us is because we have our heads down, with eyes turned to the ground; that we do not see what God sees. Lift up your head and see what God sees, how God sees things, and why God sees things the way He sees them. It is then God will use you.
